I am a huge fan of Cook Books. I read them like novels. There is nothing I love more than to sit down with a hot cup of tea and a new recipe book. I just love pouring through the pages, absorbing the pictures, reading the recipes and learning more about the methods used. I’ve always thought of cooking different cuisines as the easiest way to travel the world. Trying new flavours, textures and ingredients allows me to experience different cultures in my own home and encourages me to look for ingredients in places I’m not used to. After reading the recipes and the amazing photos I usually put together a shopping list of new ingredients and head out to find them. I’ve become very used to finding amazing and exotic ingredients in my local Indian or Chinese Supermarket, fruit & vegetable markets and even the international section of my local Woolworths or Coles has yielded some surprising results.
Eating low carb doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on flavour, or eating your favourite cuisines. It does however mean that you may have to think a little outside the square when converting your favourite recipes into low carb versions. Trial and error is just a part of the learning process.
The books below are some of the recipe books that I have in my library. Some I was given growing up as presents. Some I have purchased along the way. As you get used to low carb cooking you learn how to replace standard ingredients with low carb options. Be creative and don’t be afraid to try new things. The majority of these books are available through your local library, on-line bookstores and your local book store. I hope you find them as inspirational as I do.
Simple – Ottolenghi
Ottolenghi’s books are incredible. Each one is full of delicious recipes matched with incredible photos that look like you can just eat the food straight off the page. His recipes use some of my favourite spices and this book in particular is full of simple, easy to follow recipes. In Simple he includes recipes for vegetables, meats, fish and salads that are fresh and exciting. Most are low carb, or can be easily altered slightly. The recipes are separated into different sections depending on how much time you have and how much is involved in the recipe. This book is fantastic for inspiration. Enjoy!!!
