Easy Keto – Pete Evans

Easy Keto RS CCPete Evans has just released his new book, Easy Keto here in Australia.  As you know I’m a big fan of Pete’s books and this one is fantastic for anyone wanting to start a low carb diet or wanting to get into ketosis. Pete combines information on low carb eating with 70 recipes all beautifully photographed. It’s a great book with lots of information on Ketosis, how to begin and the ingredients you need in your low carb kitchen.  

Available at Big W, KMART and online book stores, it’s a great one to keep in your library or to recommend to a friend if they are wanting to start and not sure where to begin. Enjoy!!!


Smart Carbs – Luke Hines

Smart Carbs RS CCI really enjoyed reading Luke Hines latest book Smart Carbs. Luke is an Australian personal trainer, nutritional therapist and author of a number of Paleo and healthy eating based books. His new offer Smart Carbs is the perfect book for someone just starting out on a low carbohydrate diet. It has the basic nutritional information that everyone should know about the foods they eat. Luke identifies three stages of low carbohydrate eating and helps readers identify their goals to determine which stage they need to be in. There is a lot of information in this book along with a range of delicious recipes, each with beautiful photography to inspire. All the recipes are graded according to which stage they are appropraite for so it’s easy to identify which recipes are right for your stage.

I highly recommend this book to everyone, especially those starting on the low carb journey as it contains all the basic information that you need. Available at book stores throughout Australia and online it’s a great book to have on hand.

Eat Your Greens by Pete Evans

Hi Everyone, I’m starting off the new year with a Bang and a new book review. I am a big fan of Pete Evans and I have a number of his cook books. For those of you not in Australia, Pete Evans is an Australian Chef, T.V. personality and advocate for healthy eating. Pete was instrumental in the emergence of the Paleo lifestyle here in Australia and has provided us with a number of excellent cook books based on Paleo living and the benefits of gut health. Most recently Pete has been promoting the benefits of low carbohydrate/keto diets with this new book Eat Your Greens as well as a new book Easy Keto due for release on the 29th of Jan 2019. 

Pete’s new release, Eat Your Greens is a fantastic book and I recommend it to everyone. As consumers, we are finally starting to see how what we eat impacts our health, both in the short and long term, following the truth that Food is Nutrition, not just Fuel. To improve our health we need to remove processed foods and get back to basics and Eat Your Greens is the perfect book to help you start your new adventure enjoying the range of delicious vegetables we have available to us. Packed full of information, Eat Your Greens covers the nutrients found in vegetables, how they benefit the body and also talks about food wastage and how our food is grown. The recipes are modern, beautifully photographed and inspiring. Not all the recipes are Low Carb but they can be adapted. I highly recommend this book to everyone. I Quit Sugar, Simplicious Flow by Sarah Wilson

I have an admission to make, I do own almost every book that Sarah Wilson has released and her new release does not dissappoint. Since her beginnings with I Quit Sugar, Sarah has had huge success in Australia and worldwide with her website and books educating, promoting, challenging and inspiring consumers to Quit Sugar and find a new path to health. I really enjoy and appreciate the way Sarah writes. Her books are practical, honest and encourage you to think outside the square on all types of topics relating to food and health.

Sarah’s new book just released in Australia, Simplicious Flow, is a massive achievement at 350 pages. Packed full of beautiful recipes and photos, masses of information, and a genuinely honest approach to acknowledging and accepting the control we all have over our personal health and minimising our impact on the environment, this book is definitely worth the read. The book is focussed on minimising waste in the home (both food and consumables) and Sarah shows us how to use whole ingredients, with hundreds of recipes to inspire you. The recipes are designed to avoid refined sugars and processed ingredients, and may contain high levels of carbohydrate, but they can be used as inspiration for you to create your own low carb versions. Available at all online book stores, I got my copy from Big W. Definitely worth the read!!!!


The Clever Guts Diet by DR Michael Mosley

The Clever Guts Diet by Dr Michael Mosley has given me a real education as to what happens when I eat and digest food and the impact glut flora has on my weight and general health. He provides practical advice and information on the clinical studies performed in this area.  

I knew that gut flora plays an important role, but Michael identifies which bacteria help support our health and well being, and which bacteria are working against us. Michael also details the foods that encourage healthy gut flora and those foods that have a negative impact such as alcohol, sugar etc. The good news is that Michael also provides a plan to re-calibrate your gut flora to increase the levels of good bacteria and decrease the levels of bad to get the most out of the foods you eat. Definately worth the read, highly recommended!!!


A Fat Lot of Good by Dr Peter Brukner

This is a fantastic new release here in Australia called A Fat Lot of Good. It’s a must read for everyone on Ketosis. Dr Peter Brukner is an Australian medical professional who has worked in sports medicine with Australian and International sports teams for the past 35 years. When he was facing his own personal health issues he realised that the information taught to doctors and medical professionals is incorrect and as a result we are seeing sky rocketing levels of modern diet related disease globally.

What I love about this book is that Peter goes step by step through all the issues, looking at where we have gone wrong, identifying the major problems and how to rectify these. He talks about different types of ingredients commonly consumed and details why they should or should not be a part of your diet. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It’s not only appropriate for Australian readers, but applies globally.  


The Obesity Code by Jason Fung

This book is brilliant.  It doesn’t matter where you live in the world, The Obesity Code by Jason Fung is a fantastic book full of information everyone should read. If you have always struggled with your weight, if you are concerned about your insulin levels, insulin resistance, developing type 2 diabetes or if you have a heartbeat, I highly recommend this book!!!! Jason Fung does an incredible job explaining the cause and effect of Insulin on the human body. He goes back through years of medical case studies and research and summarises these studies to prove that we have all been following bad advice (for example the push to eat low fat products instead of high fat) and, now that we know the truth how to choose a different path to good health instead of obesity and illness. Jason shows that obesity is caused by hormones and how a constantly high level of insulin in the body can lead to insulin resistance and obesity. He talks about why you should avoid snacking, the benefits of fasting and what foods to eat and when to eat them to keep your insulin levels low.  Everything I read in this book made sense. After being on many high carb, low fat diets over the past 20 years, I now finally understand why none of them worked and why I’ve managed to lose 17kg on a LCHF diet and why I put it back on when I go out of Ketosis. Fantastic read, Highly Recommended!!!

When we begin any journey in our lives, most of us use a map or a set of directions to tell us how to get to our destination. To be able to choose where we are going we need to look at where we are now and for those of you beginning a journey like myself for either improved health or weight loss, I cannot emphasis how important it is to take the time to do just this.  If you have had enough with your current situation and you are looking for permanent change in your life, you must look at what is happening in your current life, what you would like to see in your future and identify where the changes need to be made to achieve these goals. To do this we must sit down and critically look at ourselves and our habits. If your health is the area you would like to change, then you need to review the current health issues you have and take into account all the factors that affect your health in the big picture. 

To do this you need to start to ask yourself some important questions. To help me to ask the right questions, one of the first things I did to do this was to get a hold of a range of self-help books. The one that I found to resinate the most with me, that I still read through when I need inspiration and to get back on track is Awake the Giant Within by Anthony Robbins.

If I could buy everyone who reads this blog a copy of this book I would.  It’s one of the few self-help books that I have read over the years that really struck a chord with me. By working through the book, it allowed me to see how my choices on a daily basis were ultimately allowing me to be the best or worst version of myself. I could see how up until the point of reading this book, the majority of my choices I was making were resulting in me being the worst possible version of myself. By taking responsibility and accountability for all the bad choices I had made up to that point, I could then make an instant life changing decision to be the best version of me, and by making that defining choice, I chose to instantly change my old habits and behaviours to new ones. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to support to make permanent change in their lives, health or otherwise.


First we Make the Beast Beautiful by Sarah Wilson


This is a book I think we should all read. First, we make the Beast Beautiful is a fantastic book written by fellow Australian Sarah Wilson about her experiences with Anxiety. We all suffer from Anxiety in differing degrees, but for some of us who suffer from higher levels of Anxiety, life can take be extremely challenging. Sarah writes from the heart about her personal experiences with Anxiety and her autoimmune disease Hashimotos. Sarah’s openness about her experiences is so raw and her insight into aspects of life we often think don’t think or talk about is so refreshing. I absolutely recommend this book to everyone to read whether you suffer from Anxiety or not. As a fellow anxiety sufferer, for me reading this book was like letting out a deep breath I’d been holding in for too long. Highly recommended!!!
